Pierce Alexander, based out of Charleston SC, has just released his new album, ‘The Minutehand’. The ten-song collection is a raw portrayal of Alexander’s ups and downs with feeling certain about the future. The album also served as an anchor for Alexander as the world began drastically changing around him about halfway through the process of writing it.
Throughout the album, Alexander explores the concepts of navigating through unexpected separation and feeling trapped by the confines of early adult life, as well as stories of other peoples’ situations he witnessed and was inspired by. After adjusting to new living situations, trying to find his place in society, and learning to healthily grow with someone, Alexander threw himself back into a new songwriting journey. The first two singles have received praise from outlets such as Obscure Sound, Under the Radar Magazine, and Mystic Sons. Under the Radar comments on the second single ‘Be Someone’, “The raw presentation and stripped-back instrumentation initially recall early Elliot Smith, but the song quickly becomes a more ornate creation. Gorgeous string accompaniments first join the mix, followed by understated percussion and gentle swells of synths, carrying the track into a reflective reverie.”
The album title is from a lyric from the title track about how, in the end, it is better to walk into uncharted territory and keep living your life even when every part of you wants to just sit with your thoughts and wait for things to feel right again. As a way to keep himself grounded during the tumultuous two-year period of time, Alexander wrote somewhere upwards of about 50 songs. Narrowing it down proved to be difficult but the result is a ten-song collection, produced by Josh Kaler (Slow Runner, Hula Hi-Fi) and Owen Biddle (Mister Barrington), that shows a new and more vulnerable side of the Charlestonian musician.
Following the release of the album, Alexander and his band are doing a run of shows around a handful of cities around the Southeast. You can stream the album now on all platforms and grab a CD at one of Alexander’s upcoming shows.
