Dogwood Alliance hosts the
Woods and Wilds Storytelling & Music Festival this Saturday at the
Salvage Station. The all-day festival begins at 1 pm and will feature storytellling from some of the area's greatest story-spinners, live music, activities and games, and food and drink by the river. It's free and open to the public.
The day includes live music from
Phuncle Sam,
Krekel and Whoa,
the Threadbare Skivvies,
Sherri Lynn and Mountain Friends, and a DJ set from
Oscar Malinalli.
Storyteller
Doug Elliot, who has been featured at the National Storytelling Festival, will be performing as well. Besides being a storyteller, Elliot is (among other things) a naturalist, herbalist, philosopher, and harmonica whiz who specializes in indigenous and traditional wisdom and studies plant and animal life from Canada to Central America. He has also shared stories at the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, and he has led workshops at the Smithsonian Institute.
The event is family friendly, and there will be activities for kids and adults, including games, trivia, arts and crafts, and yoga from Inner Wild Yoga. Asheville Grit and Dogwood Alliance will also formally announce the winner of the
Flash Writing Competition and will share the winning story.
Dogwood Alliance has been based in Asheville for 20 years, and is committed to the protection of
Southern forests. They have worked with some of the world's largest companies to reform practices of forestry and paper buying, and they are currently working to halt wood pellet production and the burning of forests for European electricity.
Event sponsors are Terrapin Beer, Larry's Coffee, WCQS, Columbia Forest Products, Krull & Company, Renaissance Asheville Hotel, Inner Wild Yoga, and Asheville Grit.
The Woods and Wilds Festival runs from 1 - 9 pm on Saturday, December 3. Come to the Salvage Station (468 Riverside Dr.) and celebrate our Southern forests and the remarkable work that Dogwood Alliance has done to ensure their protection. For more information,
