On Friday, July 16th, Asheville's own
Blue Ridge Rollergirls celebrate the end of their 10th season this Friday, July 16th at the US Cellular Center downtown. It's going to be a night of joyful mayhem and barely contained madness.
As a way to commemorate the occasion (and their final home game) they're throwing back to Asheville's early roller derby days by remembering the first two local derby teams, the
Candy Apple Razor Blades and the
Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am's.
The evening will start with a home team bout, and then the ladies will face off against the
Appalachian Rollergirls in a "French Broads" vs "Booneshiners" match. There will be a nod to vintage derby, with crazy costumes and theatricals alongside technical feats.
Things can get wild and crazy in the best way at roller derby, and this show is certainly no exception. $2 beer will flow, crazy costumes will be sported, and the fun is guaranteed. During halftime, the
Unifire Theater will provide entertainment. Their Facebook announcement about the halftime show promises
"Fire Skates of Death." Well, that sounds pretty cool.
The Blue Ridge Rollergirls are ranked #45 in the nation out of 284 teams and have been working it in Asheville since 2006.
Things get started at 5 pm and last until 9 pm. Tickets are $13. Children 10 and under get in free to watch the shenanigans. More information at
