Painting by Jeremy Russell
Seven years ago local artist
Dustin Spagnola began renting a studio space on Haywood Road in West Asheville by himself - something he's well aware could most likely not happen today.
He worked out of the bottom corner suite of the building alone for quite some time until realizing all the benefits to sharing it. He began putting out feelers to friends in town and quickly filled 474 Haywood Road with fellow artists.
Currently there are three others who work, display, and sell their artwork out of the gallery in addition to Dustin:
Erin Hardy,
Megan Kelly, and
Jeremy Russell. The four of them will be showing along side other local artists
Alli Good,
Gus Cutty,
Ted Harper, and
Ishmael throughout
May. And although Dustin has had some small events in the space (hosting some bands and even a fundraiser for example), this is the first time the gallery will be used for a group show.
All 8 artists will be showing individual works, but an interesting fact is that most have collaborated on pieces in the past.
"I've been pretty much planning a group show like this for about 2 years", says Dustin. "Not only is this a working studio and viewing gallery, but I want it to become more of a community space."
The 474 Gallery Group Show runs from May 8th to May 31st.
